Ingredients

Serves 6 servings
  1. 1.1 lbskunafa pastry (about 500 grams)
  2. Mixed nuts, coarsely chopped + 2 tablespoons simple syrup
  3. Clarified butter or ghee
  4. 5 tablespoonspowdered sugar
  5. For the syrup:
  6. 2 cups+ 1 1/2 cups water (about 830 ml total) and a squeeze of lemon juice

    Make the syrup: Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan over heat. Once it comes to a boil, add the lemon juice.

  2. 2

    Take the frozen kunafa pastry and pulse it in a food processor. Add melted butter and powdered sugar, then mix until the butter is fully incorporated into the kunafa.

  3. 3

    Grease a baking pan with butter. Add half of the kunafa mixture and press it down firmly. Spread the nut filling (mixed with 2 tablespoons of syrup to help it stick) evenly over the base. Add the remaining kunafa on top and press down well.

    Drizzle 2 tablespoons of melted butter over the top. Bake on the middle rack of the oven at 350°F (180°C) until the bottom is golden. Then turn on the broiler to brown the top until golden.

    Remove from the oven and pour cold syrup over the hot kunafa.
