Braised Pork with Green Beans—is a true comfort food from Northeast China. My grandpa used to make a big wok full of it—tender potatoes, soft green beans, and that rich, homemade broth. It fed the whole family. Enjoy!
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Wash and trim the ends of the green beans.
- 2
In a large pot, add the pork and 3 tablespoons of water before turning on the heat. Cook over medium heat, allowing the fat to slowly render out and the edges to brown slightly. This helps prevent splashing. Add brown sugar, the light and dark soy sauces. Toss in the garlic and scallions. Stir well to coat the pork.
- 3
Add the potatoes and green beans.
- 4
Pour in the homemade stock and 2 cups water. Season with salt, black pepper, and five spice powder.
- 5
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender and the green beans are soft and flavorful—about 25–30 minutes.
- 6
Enjoy warm over a bowl of rice.

Red braised pork Red braised pork
Red braised pork is a very common dish in China. Every region has their own flavor profile, and there is no definitive way of making this dish. The goal is to make the pork belly tender enough that you can cut it with chopsticks, and of course it needs to be red. This is the flavor I liked, and I use oyster sauce and fish sauce which is not traditionally in this dish.
