Koottu Curry or Koottu Kari is a simple yet a flavourful and a refreshing side that can be enjoyed at mealtimes. To put it in simple terms, it is same as another dish from the grand Vegetarian feast Kerala Sadya called Erissery. In Erissery, Lobia or Red Cowpeas are used. Whereas in Koottu Kari, Black Chickpeas or Kala Chana are used. The making process is also almost similar except for the use of Black Pepper which is not much of a big difference at all.
This one is a delicious and an aromatic Sadya special dish made during Onam celebrations. It is a healthy side that can be enjoyed with some freshly steamed Rice at mealtimes on any given day. It also tastes great with Pooris too. It's a semi thick dry Curry but not too dry either. It is on the softer side and can be relished with both Rice and Rotis. A perfect accompaniment at mealtimes. This is sure to impress all. No fancy ingredients and simple cooking method is what makes this beautiful dish more beautiful. Let's get rolling with the complete recipe folks.

Steps
- 1
Peel and dice potatoes and raw bananas into small cubes.
- 2
Boil with turmeric, pepper powder and salt using minimal water just enough to cook. If any water remains, dry it up before the next step.
- 3
Grind coconut, cumin, shallots, peppercorns and green chilli into a coarse paste without adding water. Set aside.
- 4
Add boiled black chickpeas or kala chana along with coconut paste to the cooked vegetables. Mix and simmer for 4-5 minutes. Also add a small piece of jaggery if desired. It is absolutely optional. Reserve a tablespoon of coconut paste for later use.
- 5
Heat coconut oil add mustard seeds and urad dal. When it turns golden, add curry leaves. And dry red chillies too. Finally a tablespoon of coconut paste, the same paste which we added to the cooked vegetables. Reserve a little from it. It becomes very handy.
- 6
Pour the tempering over the curry and mix well. That's it. Yummy and irresistible curry is at your disposal in no time. It's easy and effortlessly done. Serve it warm. Enjoy!
Tips
Keep the curry dry by using minimal water during cooking and ensure the coconut paste is thick without added water.
