Fried Komati Tomato

Joure IamAgirl Alberts
Joure IamAgirl Alberts @cook_7799469

I watched this movie just after it came out. I was still very young then and my main memory from the movie was the scene where she crashes her car repeatedly, on purpose, into the bimbo’s car, and the food they made at Whistle Stop Café. The cakes, ribs (!), and of course the fried green tomatoes made a huge impression on me. I stared at those tomatoes for hours, wondering how they got them to look like that. And the fact that a tomato could “crunch” when you bit into it, was the most mouth-watering idea concerning a tomato I had ever seen. Now, I’ve never crashed my car repeatedly into someone else’s, even though sometimes the urge is there, but I have made various batches of fried green tomatoes over the years, and this recipe is at last my final and best.I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Steps

30 mins
  1. 1

Slice the tomatoes into 4 slices each.

  2. 2

Beat the egg and milk together.

  3. 3

Blitz the Cream Crackers and parmesan together until it resembles bread crumbs.

  4. 4

Add the salt and pepper to the flour.

  5. 5

Dip a slice of tomato into the flour, then the egg, and then the Cream Cracker and parmesan mix. Make sure you pat the Cream Cracker mix on tightly.

  6. 6

Repeat until all the tomato slices are coated.

  7. 7

It always works better if you can refrigerate them for a while before you fry them, but it isn’t necessary.

  8. 8

In hot oil, fry the one side of the tomato until golden, then flip over and fry the other side. Be careful, this happens quickly, and a burnt one really doesn’t taste so good.

  9. 9

Drain them on kitchen paper and serve! They go fantastically well with some cheese and sausages, or they are great as just a snack by themselves.
