Dry/Dehydrated prawns fry and gravy

A simple dish with just few ingredients. Onakka Chemmeen as dehydrated prawns are called in Malayalam or Era Vathal/karuvaadu in Tamil, is the key. I stock up on these always for those days when I can't seem to find anything else to cook.

Steps

15 mins
  1. 1

Heat the oil and splutter the mustard seeds. Fry the curry leaves or basil leaves if you are adding them (Don't add both, add only either. Tastes a bit off when you add both the leaves. If you intend to make gravy, don't use Basil leaves)

  2. 2

Now add the Onions, garlic, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt and fry the onions till lightly crisp.

  3. 3

Be careful about the salt though. Most of the dry prawns you buy in the market already contain salt.

  4. 4

To this add the prawns and fry for a minute till well coated. Add the coriander leaves and spring onion and mix and turn off.

  5. 5

    Your dry fry is done

  6. 6

If you are doing the gravy, prepare the dry fry and keep aside

  7. 7

Now saute Onions till lightly pink in a pan and add a cup of water to it.

  8. 8

Once the water boils, add the dry fry and simmer till you have just a moist gravy.

  9. 9

    Gravy is done.

  10. 10

A few other options would be to add coconut shaving while frying the prawns, adding coconut milk to the gravy and boiling it once. All these just taste too good. Enjoy

Food is my solace anytime. And cakes and desserts are the best for that. For my first 3 years of baking I had to get innovative since I didn't have an oven. And so all my cakes or anything I baked were in pressure cookers!!The food I make is simple and easy, no fancy stuff here :) ( Am still a rookie when it comes to cooking )I love Japanese, Malay and American cuisines. And as much as adore appams and stews and Rice and fish curry. You get the idea!!Enjoy life, Enjoy food and the happy lil' sweet things!!
