Chocolate-Filled Glutinous Rice Balls

This recipe was inspired by my mom, who has to avoid sugar. Traditional bánh trôi uses a very sweet sugar syrup for the filling, but I thought of using chocolate instead. Chocolate has just the right amount of sweetness and is also good for your heart, helps reduce stress, may prevent cancer, and is good for your brain. With just a little twist, these rice balls become a delicious treat! Since the filling is chocolate, these are best enjoyed while still slightly warm—the chewy, fragrant dough and smooth, sweet filling are truly delicious.

Steps

25 minutes
  1. 1

Rinse the glutinous rice thoroughly and drain until the grains are just dry. Soak the rice in enough cold water to cover for 2-3 hours. Drain, rinse again, then grind into a fine flour. Squeeze out excess water from the flour (let it rest overnight).

  2. 2

After squeezing, knead the dough into a long rope and divide into small pieces. If the dough is too dry, add a little water.

  3. 3

Cut the chocolate into small pieces. Place a piece of chocolate in the center of each dough ball and roll into a smooth ball. Bring a pot of water to a boil, drop the balls in, and cook until they float. Remove and place in a bowl of water, then transfer to a plate and sprinkle with white sesame seeds.

Since the filling is chocolate, these are best enjoyed while still slightly warm—the chewy, fragrant dough and smooth, sweet filling are truly delicious.
