Baked Mashed Potatoes
This is my dear mom's recipe—may she rest in peace. I learned it from her and from my sister, Chef Heba Osama. I hope you all enjoy it! I love this dish so much; it reminds me of beautiful days with my beloved family 😊 and it tastes absolutely delicious.
Steps
- 1
Fill a large pot halfway with water and add the potatoes after washing them well. Boil for 30 to 40 minutes until tender.
- 2
In another pan, heat the oil, then add the onion, garlic, and spices. Sauté until lightly golden. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring well, until combined. Reduce the heat to medium, cover, and cook for 3 minutes. Stir again, add 1/4 cup water (about 60 ml), mix well, and cook until the beef is fully cooked.
- 3
After adding the 1/4 cup water, stir well.
- 4
Once the ground beef is fully cooked, set aside.
- 5
When the potatoes are done boiling, let them cool, then peel and mash them thoroughly. Add the butter, a pinch of salt and black pepper, and the milk. Mix everything together in a pot over heat after mashing, until the potatoes are smooth and fragrant with the butter.
- 6
Gradually add the milk to the mashed potatoes over heat, stirring constantly so the potatoes don't stick to the pot.
- 7
Once the mashed potatoes are ready, set aside.
- 8
Grease a baking dish with a little butter. Spread a thick layer of mashed potatoes on the bottom.
- 9
This is the first layer of potatoes.
- 10
Add a generous layer of the ground beef mixture on top.
- 11
Add a final layer of mashed potatoes to cover the beef completely. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top, then bake in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 30 minutes on the lower rack, then 10 minutes on the upper rack, or until the top is a light golden color.
- 12
Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve warm. Enjoy!
- 13
Sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted to include every step. Thank you! 😊
