Heat ove to Gas Mark 6.

Butter 4 ramikins or 1 large shallow dish.

Put potatoes, garlic bulb, milk, cream, nutmeg and bayleaf in to a pan and bring to the boil then simmer for 8-10 minutes until tender, drain remembering to collect the liquid for later, remove the garlic bulb and throw away.

Layer potatoes in a shallow dish and pour over retained liquid and top with cheese.

Cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes until bubbling and golden brown.
