For a caffeine free version use strong decaf coffee in place of espresso.
Steps

Combine espresso and baking soda, let stand

In a small bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder
- 3
In a large bowl, cream brown sugar and shortening
- 4
Blend egg and vanilla into creamed sugar mix until well blended

Add coffee to mix continuing to blend until smooth

Slowly add flour mixture until well blended.

Drop mixture by spoonful onto a cookie sheet

Bake at 360 for 8-10minutes

Cool completely on a cooling rack before icing

In a small bowl blend coffee creamer or half and half with powdered sugar until creamy. If mix is too thick add small amounts of creamer until desired consistency. If too thin add small amounts of powdered sugar until desired consistency.

Ice cooled cookies. Store in an airtight container with wax paper separating layers of cookies.
