Add lentils, turmeric, salt and water to pot, simmer for an hour. Mash with masher.

Add vegetable oil to pan, mustard seeds, cumin, cloves, cinnamon and break apart the curry leaves. Finally, add the lentils, chilli powder, pinch of turmeric, sugar and tamarind paste or lime juice. Reduce until it thickens and sprinkle some corriander.
