Ingredients

20-25 mins
Table serving
  • 1 cupYellow lentil (moong dal yellow)
  • to tasteSalt (1tsp)
  • 1Onion
  • 1/4 tspRed pepper powder
  • 1/2 tspTurmeric powder
  • 1/2 tspGaram masala
  • 1/2 tspCumin
  • as neededCoriander leaves
  • 2-3 tspClarified butter or desi ghee

Steps

20-25 mins
  1. 1

    First wash and soak yellow dal in water for half an hour

  2. 2

    Take a deep bottom pan, pour 3cups of water and bring to a boil

  3. 3

    Add soaked lentils(dal), salt, turmeric powder and a spoon of ghee (by adding ghee dal will not come out of pot while cooking) and let it to cook for 15 -20 minutes at medium to low heat..keep stirring in between while cooking

  4. 4

    Check the consistency of dal and add hot boiled water if needed and cook 5 minutes more..consistency may and not be so thick or pouring.. Switch off the flame and add chopped cilantro /coriander leaves and stir

    Tadka_take a frying pan and heat clarified butter /ghee in it.. Splatter cumin then add chopped onion(brunoise dice) init.. Stir fry the onion till get golden brown colour.. Add red pepper and garam masala in it

    Put yellow dal in a borosil bowl or casserole and pour onion tadka over it(mix half tadka in dal and half for garnishing on dal)..spread tadka little bit with the help of a spatula

  7. 7

    Yo'r yellow dal is ready

    Serve hot with chapatti and a side dish like paneer bhurji or masala lady finger

  9. 9

    Instruction_this dal might n't be cooked too much earlier before serving as the texture of dal may clumpy

  10. 10

    Tip _if you are going to cook dal in pressure cook then quickly switch off the flame after one whistle, and not to open the lid of pressure cooker immediately and let it to cook in steam
