Steps
- 1
Fry the bread cubes in plenty of hot olive oil. When the bread is golden brown, remove and set them aside on a plate lined with paper towels.
- 2
In another skillet, add the 7 tablespoons (100 ml) olive oil. Add the anise seeds and lemon peel, and sauté over medium heat for a few minutes. When the lemon peel starts to brown, turn off the heat and strain the oil.
- 3
In the same skillet, pour the strained oil back in. Add the flour and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- 4
Gradually pour in the milk in several additions, stirring constantly as you go.
- 5
Once the flour is fully incorporated with the milk, add the sugar, cinnamon stick, and a pinch of salt.
- 6
Continue stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens.
- 7
At first, the mixture will be more liquid, but it will thicken as it cools.
- 8
Serve in a large dish or in individual bowls. Top with the reserved fried bread cubes, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
- 9
Enjoy these delicious sweet gachas!
