Cooking Instructions

30 minutes
  1. 1

In a pressure cooker, take toor dal, add salt, turmeric powder, hing, cloves of garlic, ginger, cumin seeds and dry red chilies. Put few drops of oil. Cover the lid and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
Let it cool and release pressure.

  2. 2
  3. 3

When the dal mixture is lukewarm, put it in a blender jar and blend smooth. Strain it for extra smoothness. Add water and adjust consistency. It must have a runny consistency.

  4. 4
  5. 5

    Kattu is ready for tempering.

  6. 6

    For tempering..
Heat oil in a kadhai, splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds. Add curry leaves, dry red chilies and pounded garlic. Saute till garlic is bit brown.
You can also add chopped onion and saute it till brownish. Somehow I don't add onion.

  7. 7

Add the grinded dal mixture into the tadka. Cover. After sometime open and allow it to come to boil.
If you like it more spicy, add red chili powder as per your taste.
For sourness, put tamarind pulp and boil. Else add dried mango (ambula) like I do.

  8. 8

It's ready!! Let it settle down for some time then serve....
Serve hot with hot rice/bhindi fry/ papad
    Lunch sorted!!
