Same as the Navajo Fried Bread except I added onion, garlic, and ground black pepper. This would be good with bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and so on chopped up inside. Chive and green spring onion would be good also. Corn, Lima beans, lots of things would be great add ins.

  1. 1

Mix the ingredients together, except frying oil. Knead the dough till it becomes springy and firm. Mash out dust with some flour foll it out. Heat the oil.

  2. 2

Cut the dough with a sharp knife. Fry the first batch. Adjust heat if needed. Move bread to a plate that can accept the heat.

  3. 3

I turned heat to medium high. Fried 2-1/2 minutes per side. Time will vary with different pan difference and if it's stainless, cast iron, or aluminium. Finish cutting the dough fry and repeat. I didn't have room so I rolled out enough to fit the pan cut and fry till I was done.

As a Native American who grew up with frybread, could I share the advice to NOT use a floured surface to shape the dough.. when you go to shallow-fry it, the excess flour goes to the bottom of the pan and will turn dark brown, making the oil sour and that affects all the following pieces... try very lightly oiling your hands or counter to work the dough .. just sayin
