Rinse the lentils and place them in a pot. Add enough water to cover the lentils by about 1 inch (3 cm). Add the cumin, turmeric, salt, red pepper flakes, and half of the onion, finely chopped. Bring to a boil and cook until the lentils are soft and blended. If using a pressure cooker, cook for just 10 minutes until ready.

In a skillet, sauté the remaining half of the onion with the olive oil over medium heat until lightly golden. Pour this over the soup. Serve hot with toasted or fried bread, pickles, and green onions. This is one of the tastiest and quickest meals, perfect for cold weather.

If the soup is too thick, add hot water as needed to reach your desired consistency.
