Rinse the toor dal thoroughly in a pressure cooker. Add salt, turmeric, and 2 cups water (about 480 ml). Cook on medium heat for 4-5 whistles until the dal is soft.

Once the dal is cooked, open the lid and stir. In a separate pan, heat 2 tablespoons oil. Add cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, and a pinch of asafoetida. Add chopped garlic, grated ginger, chopped green chilies, and chopped onion. Sauté until the onions turn golden. Add chopped tomato, cover, and cook for 1 minute until the tomato softens.

Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Turn off the heat. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with roti or rice.
