Greek Village Salad (Horiatiki)
Every season has its own peak flavors. Guess which one is the highlight of summer...
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Wash the vegetables thoroughly and drain them. The secret to a great Greek salad is using the freshest, in-season ingredients: ripe, flavorful tomatoes; firm, crisp cucumbers without seeds; fragrant, fresh bell peppers; and slightly spicy red onions. Slice the onion. Leave some slices whole and separate others into thin strips.
- 2
Remove the seeds and white membranes from the bell pepper. Slice it, then cut into thin strips. Wash the cucumber well, since you'll slice it (optionally with the skin) into thin rounds. Slice the tomatoes as well. Collect any tomato juices that run out while cutting and set them aside in a bowl—these are essential for the salad.
- 3
In a bowl, add 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and the collected tomato juices. Mix well. This blend of Greek olive oil and juicy tomato, along with the feta you'll add later, is what makes this salad unbeatable. Squeeze the extra juicy tomato into the bowl to extract all its juices (do not add the flesh to the salad).
- 4
Add the chopped vegetables to the bowl and toss to combine. Sprinkle with salt and oregano, then toss again to let the flavors marinate.
- 5
Add the purslane, capers, and caper leaves (if using).
- 6
Cut the feta into thin but wide slices and place them on top of the salad. Add the olives for extra flavor and a pop of color.
- 7
Drizzle with a little more high-quality olive oil. The salad is ready.
- 8
Transfer to a serving bowl and bring it to the table. Your guests will be eager to dig in—some might even get ready for big pieces of bread to soak up the juices!

Traditional Greek Salad (Choriatiki Salata) Traditional Greek Salad (Choriatiki Salata)
Hi everyone, I hope you all enjoyed your weekend :) A brand new week ahead of us and I am hoping that it is a good one for everyone. I am back with a salad again today, and this one I know that everyone knows and has tried :) the Traditional Greek Salad, or otherwise known in Greece as "Choriatiki Salata" which translated into English means "Country Salad" or "Village Salad"This reminds of a story, my Dad had a really great sense of humour sometimes his jokes were just to funny that my stomach would hurt from laughing so much, but sometimes he would say things that were just so nonchalant...This is really funny but you need to understand Greek to be able to understand. We had gone to a Greek Tavern in Chasia which is an area in Athens that mainly has Greek Taverns. :) We were just about to order the appetisers when my dad turned around in a very nonchalant way and asked the waiter if they had "Vlaxiki salata" instead of saying "Choriatiki salata". We had never heard this salad referred to as Vlaxiki Salad, we had a good laugh and so did the waiter!! :)The truth is that back in those days the Villagers would grow there own tomatoes, cucumbers, so when working in the fields they would have a Tomato, Cucumber a few olives on a napkin to eat. So the term Vlaxiki Salata comes from how they used to eat, as years followed the named changed to Greek Salad, or Choriatiki. :) My mom grew up in a village so she told me that back then this is what my grandfather use Foodzesty -
Greek Style Salad Greek Style Salad
I made this by combining ingredients that my partner loves, with cucumbers that he doesn't, and it turned out great. There's nothing much to it. I usually cut up what I have on hand, and add mint, which I take from my planter. Real Greek salads contain garlic, but since I don't like the smell, I make it without.
