Rolled-Up Ohagi with Walnuts and Cheese

I saw a recipe for a very cute rolled ohagi recipe in a local newsletter. Since my daughter does not like red bean paste, I filled it with cheese and walnuts instead and to create a new version.
Kinako could be substituted with roasted ground sesame seeds and sugar. Recipe by zakkiiM

These are the ingredients.
- 2
Crush the walnuts with your hands. Put them on aluminum foil and roast them in the toaster oven for 3-5 minutes (Do not scorch them).
- 3
Place plastic wrap on a makisu (sushi mat), wet a wooden spatula, then spread and flatten the mochi rice.
- 4
Place red bean paste on top and spread it thinly.
- 5
Add cream cheese and spread it out.
- 6
Place the walnuts from Step 2 at the edge of the mat closest to you.
- 7
First, pull up the makisu and plastic wrap close to you and wrap up the walnuts and roll it. Then squeeze it in place!!
- 8
Gently take off the plastic wrap and return the makisu and the plastic wrap to their original position.
- 9
Now, roll it to the end in the same way that you wrap sushi.
- 10
Gently remove the plastic wrap while adjusting the shape.
- 11
Sprinkle kinako on a plate, and place the roll on top. Coat the roll evenly in kinako.
- 12
Slice the roll into your preferred thickness and it is done.

Easy to Make Ohagi (Rice Cakes) Easy to Make Ohagi (Rice Cakes)
My daughter loves mochi and dumplings.Steaming ready-made cut rice cakes with regular white rice gives it a chewy texture. It's just like using glutenous rice.Steaming the rice to a softer consistency than usual makes it easy to mash and will come out nice and chewy! If you plan to prepare the rice cakes early in advance, adding a bit of sugar (about 1 teaspoon) in Step 3 helps keep the rice moist. Our Family Recipe for Ohagi, Passed Down Over Three Generations Our Family Recipe for Ohagi, Passed Down Over Three Generations
Our family LOVES ohagi. My grandmother and mother used to make them for me. Now I am married, and since my husband loves ohagi as well, I make these quite often. I remember the hints and ingredients I picked up from them well like a magic spell, because I always helped make these. It's definitely well worth the effort to make anko bean paste yourself. You mustn't skip Step 1! Wait until the azuki beans have become very tender before adding sugar and salt! We use an equal amount of glutinous rice and white rice. The ohagi won't get hard even if kept for a day. (Our recipe is rather sweet. It says in Step 3 that you have to leave it to stand overnight, but you can go straight on to Step 4 if you like.) For 20 small balls. Recipe by Konokonomanma cookpad.japan -

Easy Ohagi Rice Cakes Made with Pre-Cut Mochi and Rice Easy Ohagi Rice Cakes Made with Pre-Cut Mochi and Rice

Easy 3-Color Ohagi Easy 3-Color Ohagi
After the big earthquake we were told to cut down on electricity use, but it was o-higan (the fall equinox) so I wanted to eat ohagi! So, I cooked the mochi rice in a pot (with gas) for the ohagi. The rice cooks faster than in an electric cooker, so it was easy. When you are cooking the rice, if the heat is too high you'll have burned bits, so please cook it over low heat so as to avoid burning the rice as much as possible. If you have burned bits of rice, the ohagi will be hard and chewy...When adding the coating to the ohagi, I recommend using plastic wrap. Your hands won't get messy, and it's also more sanitary. Strawberry Ohagi Rice Cakes Strawberry Ohagi Rice Cakes
This is for my children, who love strawberry daifuku. Whenever I make ordinary ohagi rice cakes, I make these too.- Small, round and not so sour strawberries are good for this recipe. I often use saga-honoka, beni hoppe or amaou strawberries.- Make sure to wrap the bean paste or dough thinly. Otherwise, it will turn into a massive rice cake. - Refer to "My Precious Ohagi"to see how to make the bean paste filling, etc. The amount of rice is more than usual because you're using it to make ohagi. If you reduce the amount, it will be difficult to cook in the rice cooker. If you use it all for strawberry ohagi, it should make around 30. Recipe by Keyua cookpad.japan -
