Ingredients

  • 6 slicesbread (white / wholemeal)
  • 3 tspoil
  • 1/2 tspmustard seeds / rai
  • A fewcurry leaves / kadi patta
  • 1/2medium sized onion (finely chopped)
  • 1green chilli (slit lengthwise)
  • 1/2 tspginger paste / adrak paste
  • 2medium sized tomatoes (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 tspturmeric / haldi
  • 1 tspkashmiri red chili pwoder / lal mirch powder
  • 1/2 tspsugar
  • to taste Salt
  • 1/2small sized capsicum (finely chopped (colour of your choice))
  • 2 tbspwater (if required)

Steps

10 Minutes
  1. 1

    Firstly, in a toaster or tawa toast the bread to golden brown and crisp.

  2. 2

    Further, cut the bread slices into cubes and keep aside.

  3. 3

    In a large kadai, heat oil.

  4. 4

    Thereafter, add mustard seeds and curry leaves.

  5. 5

    Saute till the mustard seeds to splutter.

  6. 6

    Furthermore, add onions, ginger paste and green chilli.

  7. 7

    Saute till onions sweat and turn translucent.

  8. 8

    Now add tomatoes and saute well.

  9. 9

    Saute till the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.

  10. 10

    Add turmeric, chili powder, sugar and salt.

  11. 11

    Saute for a minute on low flame till the spices are cooked well.

  12. 12

    Now add capsicum and continue to saute.

  13. 13

    Do not over cook and make sure to retain the crunchiness of capsicum.

  14. 14

    Add 2 tbsp of water and mix the mixture well.

  15. 15

    Up next, add toasted bread pieces and mix gently without breaking the bread pieces.

  16. 16

    Now, cover and simmer for 2-3 minutes, making sure the bread absorbs masala.

    At last, serve bread upma garnished with coriander leaves and lemon slices/wedges.
