Steps

1-1.5 hour
  1. 1

Firstly, rinse the apples. Peel the apples & Chop them into small pieces.

  2. 2

Next, transfer them in a bowl & add Brown sugar/ (any sugar substitute) Cinnamon & nutmeg, lime juice & flour. Mix everything together properly & keep aside.

  3. 3

Take a baking dish (I used a glass baking dish) & grease it properly & keep aside.

  4. 4

For making the top layer of crumble coating first in a bowl sieve the flour, powdered sugar, spices (if using any) & salt. Then add in your oats. Toss everything together.

  5. 5

Cut the butter in small pieces and gently rub the butter with the oats & flour mixture until it resembles a wet sandy crumb like texture. You can use either a pastry cutter, or fork to mix everything together or just use your fingertips.

  6. 6

For final assembling everything into layers, take the baking dish & add in the apple filling as the bottom layer. Meanwhile, preheat your oven @180 degree C for 15 min.

  7. 7

For the top layering, pour the crumble topping evenly over the apple fillings. Press the crumbs lightly with a spoon or measuring cup so that it is uniform & leveled.

  8. 8

Optional: This is an additional & optional step. I sprinkled around 2 tbsp of finely chopped almonds on top of the crumble. You can skip this step if you want your Crumble to be nut free.

  9. 9

Bake your Crumble in a preheated oven @ 180 degree for 30-35 min (middle rack) or until the fruits start bubbling at the sides. The topping should be firm to touch & golden brown in colour.

  10. 10

Let the Crumble sit for 15 min before serving. You can serve this crumble warm/ cold. It tasted delicious either way. This apple crumble freezes well. Just warm it up a bit before serving.

  11. 11

Serving suggestions: You may serve the crumble with dollop of ice cream too. But it can be served plain too if you want it to be a bit on healthier side.

  12. 12

    Additional Recipe Notes: 👇
✓Brown Sugar: The amount of sugar used depends on sweetness of the fruit being used. Since my apples were sweet I used less sugar & it was perfect as per my taste. You may change the amount as per your taste. You may also substitute with honey.

  13. 13

Choice of fruits: You may swap the apples for any other fruits like pear, cherry, strawberry, peach, plums, pineapples, blueberry.

  14. 14

Consistency of fruit filling: The apple filling should have a consistency that is neither too thick nor too thin. It should have a jam like consistency.

  15. 15

✓Cinnamon: I love the smell of cinnamon in my dishes. So I used 1 TSP. You may reduce to 1/2 TSP if you wish.
✓ Butter: You can substitute butter for coconut oil if you want your fruit crumble dairy free. Use 45- 50 gm of coconut oil. Do not use melted coconut oil.

  16. 16

✓ Please use powdered sugar while making the crumble topping. Granulated sugar might not work well. You may swap the brown sugar with either white sugar/ coconut sugar. Honey/ other syrup may not work well while making crumble.

  17. 17

✓ Since each oven is different, so please adjust the temperature & time based on your own oven.

  18. 18

    Happy Baking!
