Smyrna-Style Dessert with Mastic

An easy dessert that's so fragrant! A customer of my mother's gave us this recipe, which they used to make in Smyrna. We loved it as kids and made it all the time, especially in the summer! I tweaked it a bit by using half flour and half cornstarch for a smoother texture.

An easy dessert that's so fragrant! A customer of my mother's gave us this recipe, which they used to make in Smyrna. We loved it as kids and made it all the time, especially in the summer! I tweaked it a bit by using half flour and half cornstarch for a smoother texture.
Steps
- 1
Measure 4 1/4 cups whole milk (1 liter) and pour half into a saucepan with the sugar. In the other half, add the flour and cornstarch and mix well until dissolved.
- 2
Crush the mastic tears with 1 teaspoon sugar in a mortar and pestle. Set aside.
- 3
Turn the stove to medium heat and add the butter to the saucepan, stirring until melted.
- 4
Once the butter is melted, add the milk with the flour and cornstarch mixture. Stir constantly until it thickens. When it starts to thicken, add the crushed mastic. Mix well until smooth and ready.
- 5
Pour into glasses. Once cooled, refrigerate and serve topped with your favorite jam. I used homemade strawberry sauce!
- 6
Enjoy!
