Ingredients

  2. 2 tablespoonsoil
  3. 1 teaspooncumin seeds
  4. 1-inch cinnamon stick
  5. 1bay leaf
  6. 2onions, finely chopped
  7. 2tomatoes
  8. 2green chilies, chopped
  9. 1 tablespoonginger-garlic paste
  10. 1 teaspoonred chili powder
  11. 1/2 teaspoonturmeric powder
  12. 2 teaspoonscoriander powder
  13. Salt to taste
  14. 1/2 teaspoongaram masala
  15. 1 tablespoondried fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi)
  16. 2 tablespoonscilantro, finely chopped

Cooking Instructions

    To make lobiya dal, first clean and wash the black-eyed peas thoroughly, then soak them in water for 4 to 5 hours.

    Next, put the black-eyed peas in a pressure cooker, add salt and 3 cups of water, and cook on medium heat until 3 to 4 whistles. Turn off the heat and open the cooker once it has cooled down.

    Now, heat oil in a pan. Once hot, add the bay leaf, cinnamon stick, and cumin seeds. Sauté for 20 seconds, then add the onions and sauté until golden brown. Add the green chilies and ginger-garlic paste, and sauté them as well.

    Add the tomato paste and sauté. Then add the dry spices: red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and sauté until the spices release oil.

    Add the black-eyed peas along with their water to the pan, cover, and let it simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.

    After 5 minutes, crush the garam masala and dried fenugreek leaves with your hands and mix them into the gravy. Turn off the heat and add the cilantro.
