Chatpati Jhalmuri

This is a street food found in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Bengal. We often make it at home as an evening snack. My dad loved it. Even today, we sometimes make it for an evening snack. You can't find Jhalmuri in Mumbai, but you can get Bhel Puri, though the taste is different.

Check the puffed rice to remove any burnt pieces. If the puffed rice is soft, lightly toast it to crisp it up. Peel and wash the cucumber and onion, then chop them into small pieces. Wash and chop the green chili. Remove the skins from the chickpeas, if needed.

In a large bowl, add the puffed rice. Open all the snack packets and add them in. Add chili powder, black salt, and chaat masala. Mix well. Add the chopped onion, cucumber, and green chili. Mix again.

Add the mustard oil and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly. Your Jhalmuri is ready to serve.

Note: You can add any namkeen snack, cilantro, sprouted mung beans or chickpeas, or boiled potatoes as you like. For a slightly wetter Jhalmuri, add small pieces of boiled potato and a little thick tamarind paste. In that case, skip the lemon juice.
