On a cold winter solstice, enjoy a bowl of hot, comforting sweet soup. This nostalgic traditional flavor warms both the heart and the stomach, bringing back memories of childhood.

Gather all the ingredients.

Peel the 2 sweet potatoes (about 1 lb/500 grams) and cut them into bite-sized chunks. Peel the ginger and slice it.

Crack open the dried longan and rinse the red dates. Soak both in 1 tablespoon of rice wine.

Fill a pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. Add the sweet potatoes and cook for about 10-15 minutes, until a skewer can pierce them easily and they are tender.

In a separate small pot, add 2 cups water (about 500 ml) and the ginger slices. Simmer for 15 minutes.

Add the longan and red dates to the ginger water. Cover and simmer for another 15 minutes.

Stir in the dark brown sugar to make a sweet ginger syrup.

Place some cooked sweet potato in a bowl and pour the hot ginger syrup over it.

Serve hot and enjoy the comforting warmth.
