Umm Ali

Umm Ali is a traditional Egyptian dessert similar to pudding made with milk, cream ,nuts and puff pastry or bread. This is a baked pudding which can be served hot or cold with ice cream or whipped cream. I have tasted this dish once during a buffet lunch from a restaurant in Dubai which placed on their dessert counter . It had a flaky layer outside which is made up of puff pastry and inside it was more liquidy with goodness of milk ,mild sweet and bites of nuts gave a crunchiness in between .It tasted good and new to me , made my taste buds happier so added to my cooking wish list to give a try once.And got a chance to cook this tasty delight as our Eid special dessert.
Every Eid will take my memories back to my childhood days Eid celebration .On that day i will wake up early in the morning listening to Thakbeer from the mosque nearby our home which fills my heart and soul with a joy unexpalined . The very first thing i will do is remove the dried mehandi i applied on my hands the day before night to see how beautifully the color has turned .The elders at my home will be rushing to get ready to attend the Eid prayers and myself rush to have a bath ,excited to wear my new Eid dress which was bought ahead of Eid . By that time my house will be filled with aroma of various special dishes that my mom cooking in the kitchen .The Eid food menu will be same almost every year, mutton liver roast and beef roast is a must during breakfast . Steps

Remove the crust of the bread slices and cut into small square pieces. Toast them over a pan with the butter.

Spread the toasted bread pieces evenly over a dessert glass dish and sprinkle the nuts, raisins and coconut all over (spare some nuts to garnish on the top).

Combine 1 cup milk,cream,sugar and vanilla essence in a pan and boil it. Cook it for 3-4 minutes and pour it over the bread and nuts in the dish.

Combine rest of the milk with condensed milk in another vessel and warm it slightly and spread over the bread mixture.

Sprinkle some nuts and cardamom powder over it.

Preheat the oven to 180 degree and bake it for about 15-20 minutes or till the color of top slightly changes to brown.

Remove from the oven and garnish it with powdered pistachios.Serve it hot or cold with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
