Ingredients

  • 1 cupTur dal (yellow lentil)
  • 1Drumstick
  • 2Brinjal medium (sliced or chopped)
  • 1Radish small (sliced)
  • ½ cupPumpkin chopped
  • 1Onion medium chopped
  • 2Tomatoes medium (chopped)
  • 3 tbspsmasala Sambar (I use my home made sambar )
  • ½ tspTurmeric
  • ½ tspFenugreek seeds (methi)
  • 1 tspseeds Mustards
  • Curry leaves
  • 3 - 4chilies Whole red
  • a big pinchHing (asafoetida)
  • 3 tbspsTamarind pulp (you can add more if prefered)
  • 2 tbspsCoriander leaves chopped
  • Salt as per taste
  • 3 tbspsOil
  • 4 cupsWater

Steps

  1. 1

    Boil dal with 2 cups of water till done

  2. 2

    In a pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds, methi seeds, allow it to splutter

  3. 3

    Add curry leaves, hing and dried red chilies

  4. 4

    Add onion, fry for a minute, add drumsticks, brinjal, radish, pumpkin and fry for few minutes

  5. 5

    Add tomatoes, turmeric, sambar powder, cover and cook for 3-4 minutes

  6. 6

    Add boiled dal, 2 cups of water, salt and simmer till vegetables are done and give nice aroma of sambar

  7. 7

    Finally add tamarind pulp and coriander leaves, simmer for another 6-8 minutes

  8. 8

    Tasty sambar is ready to be served with hot steamed rice, dosa, idlies, medu vadas and so on…
