I found an old recipe from my grandmother.

Slice the bread and let it dry out.

Spread a generous layer of jam on the bottom of a baking dish.

Arrange the bread slices on top, overlapping them slightly.

Whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract.

Pour the mixture over the bread. Let the bread soak up the liquid, pressing it down occasionally with a spatula.

Dot the top with pieces of butter and bake at 350°F (180°C) for about 40 minutes. The top should be golden but not burnt.
