Ingredients

  • 2 cupsugar
  • 2 largeeggs
  • 1 stickbutter (1/2 cup), softened
  • 2 tspbaking soda
  • 2 1/2 cupall purpose flour
  • 1/2 cupcocoa powder
  • 1/8 tspsalt
  • 2 tspvanilla extract (I use extra)
  • 2 cupbuttermilk or sour milk (make sour milk by putting 2 tablespoons lemon juice or vinegar in a 2 cup measuring cup; add enough milk to make 2 cups)

Steps

    Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. 2

    Grease and flour a 9 X 13 inch pan, two 9 inch round pans, or three 8 inch round pans and set aside.

  3. 3

    In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and the sugar until fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add the eggs and beat well.

  5. 5

    Alternate adding the buttermilk and the flour.

  6. 6

    Add the baking soda, cocoa, vanilla and salt.

  7. 7

    Mix well.

  8. 8

    Pour into the pan(s) and bake for 40 to 50 minutes for a 9 X 13 pan or 20 to 25 minutes for the round pans.

    The cake is done when the center springs back when touched.

  10. 10

    Let cool completely before frosting.

Some of my favorite things are family, friends, my pets, cooking, baking, football (Badger & Packer), Brewer baseball, college basketball, car racing, thrift stores, volunteering, and rummage sales. I have a 9 year old rescue dog, and 7 birds ( 6 are rescue) and they range in age from 1 year to over 19 years old. I volunteer for a dog rescue and a shelter, as well as other festivals and organizations.
