In 9x13 pan, combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, melted, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Peel, core and thinly slice 2 or 3 tart apples and add to pan, along with 1/2 cup dried cranberries or
raisins. Stir to coat and spread evenly in pan.
Cut French bread into 1-inch slices and arrange in single layer over apples. Mix 6 large eggs, 1 1/2 cups milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon and pour over bread.Cover and refrigerate 4 to 24 hours.
Bake, covered with aluminum foil at 375 for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake 5 to 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes.
Serve upside down.
