This is Dad's recipe. It is a melody of flavors that offers a great stand alone dish.
Steps

Split the squash lengthwise and remove seeds. Bake facing down in a baking dish for 30 minutes at 350°F. Or until tender.

While the squash are baking sautéed mushrooms, onions, salt, and pepper until onions are soft.

Drain, but keep liquid. Combine with remaining ingredients.

Fill squash halves with stuffing and bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes at 350°F.

Baste squash with sauté juice during baking.
