From Julia Child's cookbook, volume one, pg 46. Shockingly simple and easy, for Julia Child. Also wonderfully flexible- basically, just throw whatever you want/have into a pot, give it the above fancy name, and voilà.

Boil water, vegetables, and salt slowly for 40 minutes.

20 minutes before serving, add green beans, other beans, pasta, bread, and seasonings to boiling soup. Boil for 15 minutes.

In serving pot, mix paste, garlic, basil, and cheese. Drop by drop, mix olive oil. When soup is ready, beat a cup gradually into pistou. Pour in rest of soup.

Serve with French bread and olive oil.
