Pour the oil into a pot over medium heat and add the onions. Cook until they turn golden brown.

Once the onions are golden, remove them from the oil.

Drain the onions using a fine mesh strainer.

Use the flavored oil to sauté the rice. Add two tablespoons of the fried onions to the rice and stir.

Boil the lentils separately, then add them (without the cooking water) to the rice and mix well.

Add the lentil cooking water to the rice, then season with salt and ground cumin to taste.

Cook until the rice is fully done.

Spoon the rice onto a serving dish, top with the remaining fried onions, and serve.
