Daalichi Aamti is a daal preparation from the Maharashtrian cuisine. Here, you can find different versions of the aamti in different regions, made by different communities. Daal basically forms a part of the staple diet in Maharashtra in almost all regions. It is relished either with rice or with chapatis by some!
Daal in itself is a powerhouse of nutrition! When combined with Vit C, our body is able to absorb the iron, which is present in the daal and drumsticks as we all know are quite nutritious too. This is a very simple and comforting daal, where the addition of drumsticks makes it all the more nutritious!

Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 1/2 cupToor Dal (Tuvar daal / Split Pigeon Peas)
  2. 1/2Tomato…. Chopped
  3. 2Drumsticks
  4. 1/4 tspTurmeric Powder
  5. 1/4 tspRed Chilli Powder
  6. 1 1/2 tspJaggery
  7. 1/4 cupFresh Coriander Leaves for garnishing
  8. For The Tempering :
  9. 2 tspHomemade Ghee (Clarified Butter)
  10. 1/4 tspMustard Seeds
  11. 1/4 tspCumin Seeds
  12. 1/4 tspAsafoetida
  13. 1Green Chilli
  14. 1 sprigCurry Leaves

Steps

  1. 1

    To make the Daalichi Aamti, first wash the Tuvar daal twice and soak in sufficient water for about an hour and a half. After the daal is well soaked, drain out all the water.

    Transfer it to a colander and add to it, turmeric powder, chopped tomato and clean water, a little above the level of the daal.

  3. 3

    Wash the drumsticks and chop into medium pieces without peeling it too much. Try keeping the peels intact. Else the drumsticks will get totally smashed when cooked in a pressure cooker.

  4. 4

    Transfer the drumsticks to a colander and add very little water to it.

  5. 5

    Place the daal in the pressure cooker and shut the colander with a lid. Place the colander with drumsticks over it, uncovered.

  6. 6

    Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for 8 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally and then open the lid.

  7. 7

    Smash the daal with the back of a ladle and add some water to get a medium thick consistency.

  8. 8

    It is better to add at first the water in which the drumsticks have been cooked and then more water if required to get a medium thick consistency.

    Next, add the jaggery, red chilli powder and salt to taste.

  10. 10

    Bring it to a boil and add the cooked drumsticks to it. Boil further for a minute or two and switch off the flame.

    Heat a tempering kadhai and add the homemade ghee to it.

  12. 12

    Add the mustard seeds and as soon as they splutter, add the cumin seeds, asafoetida, green chillies and curry leaves.

  13. 13

    Pour this tempering over the daal and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

  14. 14

    Serve this delicious Daalichi Aamti with steamed rice, a wedge of lemon and some vegetable by the side!
