Steps
- 1
In a bowl, combine the cornmeal and salt. Slowly add 1/4 cup of water while stirring with a spoon until a dough forms. Knead until the dough is smooth and free of lumps.
- 2
Once the dough is ready, divide it into 3 small balls. Take one ball in your hand and roll it until it no longer sticks to your hands.
- 3
Place the ball between your hands and gently pat it back and forth, flattening it into a thick, round patty about the size of a small hamburger.
- 4
Preheat an electric griddle to 300°F (about 150°C) or heat a skillet over low heat. Cook the arepas for 6 to 8 minutes on each side.
- 5
To check if the arepas are done, tap one side with your fingers; they should sound hollow, like a drum. They are ready to eat—fill them with your favorite ingredients.
- 6
- 7
Finished arepas, plain and with butter.
