S.O.S Sh** on a Shingle”

My grandma always made this , when I was growing up I know it as Creamy Hamburger Gravy (is an old-school meal. ) and sometime she called it S.O.S. She tend to make this at the end of the weeks before my grandpa got his paycheck. I make this from time to time. She never showed me how to make it or anything I just remembered watching her make it. As a kid it was one of my favorites not really sure why . I tend to make this when I miss my grandparents. I only have one kid who likes it, but he eats about anything. So this recipe is dedicated to my grandparents....

Mike's SOS [s*** on a shingle] Mike's SOS [s*** on a shingle]
If you're US military, ex-military or even a military brat, you'll definitely remember what a SOS was. Well, all of us members and federal prisoners anyway. It was made with disgusting expired canned chipped beef that you had to rinse twice - or, browned half spoiled hamburger - outdated cans of cream of mushroom soup - mushy peas and a powdered milk gravy. If you were lucky, you'd get packets of brown gravy. With that, my daddy decided to seriously revamp that disappointing original version a long time ago. This was his super easy, uber delicious version of that dish. Great work students! MMOBRIEN -

Sgt. B's SOS Sgt. B's SOS
If I have any other Military out there, you know what I mean about SOS. As an Army cook, my favorite meal to work was breakfast. I was H-LL on the grill. I could have omelets, fried and scrambled all going at one time. My poor peons and Koreans, would stand there in disbelief, at how much I could do at one time - talk about multi-tasking. When I left the kitchen and went to the office, I got my hands on the old recipe cards - DOD got us some new fancier, prettier ones (our tax dollars at work). The one I really wanted was for SOS. Between moves, military and civilian, I have lost them. But don't fear, I have one that is pretty close to it. Sheila Calnan -

Chipped Beef S.O.S Chipped Beef S.O.S
S.O.S. stands for er... sh!t on a shingle. Yep, excuse the language, but knowing the name and its history are important. 😉Originally a US military meal having its start during war time because it was inexpensive to make, especially in large quantities, it is traditionally a chipped beef white gravy served over toast. However ground beef and tuna have been used in alternate versions. It's a good, cheap dinner (or breakfast) idea that brings on a flood of nostalgia for many people. StephieCanCook -
