This recipe is a perfect deep fried South Indian snack for any festival like diwali, navratri or just to be made as an evening snack at any time of the year. There are many variations to this recipe like using green chillies or just red chilli powder. This is made using soaked rice.
Steps

Soak rice for 3 hours minimum.

Take roasted gram in a blender and powder. Seive into a mixing bowl.

Take green chillies,salt and some rice in a mixer and grind to fine paste.

Add the remaining rice in a grinder and grind to thick paste adding very little water.(you can add the green chillies batter also along with this to mix before taking the batter)

Melt vanaspathi. Add sesame seeds, red chilli powder and cumin seeds. Pour vanaspathi and knead well. Check salt and chilli.

Grease the back of the plates with oil. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed kadai. Meanwhile press the batter into murukku press with single star design and spin as shown.

Flip the plates into hot oil. Turn and cook both sides till the bubbles in oil subsides.

Drain the oil. Cool and store in airtight containers.
