Baked Broccoli with Bechamel, Egg, and Turkey Ham

Although broccoli season is from November to April, luckily, we can still enjoy it in May and June. My friend Juli shared this recipe with me. We've adapted it a bit because the original recipe steamed the broccoli, but we prefer the flavor when it's baked. At home, we usually make the BECHAMEL sauce, but if you don't want to complicate things, you can buy it pre-made. If you decide to make it yourself, you can see how we do it in the last step. The original recipe uses serrano ham, so if you prefer, you can swap one ham for the other. You can also use a whole broccoli and, instead of one egg, boil two. You would need to add a bit more diced ham. The result is spectacular 😋

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Wash and cut the broccoli into small florets and place them in a baking dish lined with parchment paper. Drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil on top and add a pinch of salt. Bake for 10-15 minutes (don't let them burn). While the broccoli is baking, boil the egg.

  2. 2

Place the broccoli in a baking dish that fits the amount of florets you have and add the sliced hard-boiled egg.

  3. 3

Grate the cheese and add half of the shredded mozzarella. (You can add as much as you like). Chop the turkey ham, mix it with the bechamel sauce and grated cheese, and cover the broccoli with it. Add a bit more mozzarella on top and bake with the broiler until the mozzarella is golden brown.

Note: You can buy pre-made bechamel sauce, but if you prefer to make it yourself, it's very easy: heat 3 tablespoons of butter (about 40 grams), add 1/3 cup of flour (about 40 grams), stir to cook, and gradually incorporate 2 cups of milk (about 1/2 liter), stirring to avoid lumps. Add a bit of salt and pepper, and it's ready.
