Wash arhar dal in running water 2-3 times. Put it in pressure cooker. Add water, salt, turmeric powder and grated tomato and pressure cook till 7-8 whistles. Switch off the flame and let pressure releases automatically.

In a pan and cooking Oil. Put cumin seeds and when cumin seeds splutter add asafoetida and saute for 30 seconds. Add red chilli powder, garam masala and kasuri methi and dried whole red chilli and saute for 1 minute. Transfer this tadka in dal and stir.

Serve hot with chapatti or rice garnished with chopped coriander leaves
