Tasted them on a cruise during tea time and it was love at first bite. This Swedish treat became incredibly popular after arriving in the United States. These are soft, fragrant rolls that are easy to make, requiring just a bit of patience for the dough to rise.

  2. 2 1/2 teaspoonsfresh yeast (about 8 grams)
  3. 1/2 cupmilk (about 130 ml)
  4. 1/2 cupwater (about 130 ml)
  5. 1/4 cupsugar (about 60 grams)
  6. 1/4 cupsunflower oil (about 60 ml)
  7. 1whole egg
  8. 1 1/2 teaspoonsfine salt (about 8 grams)
  9. For the filling
  10. 2 tablespoonsmelted butter, cooled
  11. 2heaping tablespoons cinnamon
  12. 3 tablespoonsbrown sugar
  13. For the glaze
  14. 3/4 cuppowdered sugar (about 90 grams)
  15. 1 tablespoonwater

Cooking Instructions

25 min + rising
  1. 1

First, prepare the starter to keep the rolls soft. Mix the water and milk and dissolve the yeast in it. Add 3/4 cup of flour (about 100 grams) from the total, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in the turned-off oven for a couple of hours.

  2. 2

After the time has passed, add the sugar, egg, and oil to the starter, and finally the salt, and mix with a spoon. Then add the rest of the flour and knead. You should get a smooth dough; if it sticks to your hands, sprinkle with a little flour. Let it rise for another 3 hours, covered.

  3. 3

Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to form a rectangle about 22x14 inches (55x35 cm).

  4. 4

Brush with the melted butter and the mixture of sugar and cinnamon, then roll it up.

  5. 5

Cut rolls about 1/2 inch thick and place them on a baking sheet, spaced apart. They need to rise for another hour and will stick together.

  6. 6

Bake in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for about 25 minutes until golden but not burnt. Let cool and drizzle with the glaze made by mixing the water with the powdered sugar.
