Slow cooked venison shank with chipolatas
My mum recently bought a slow cooker and has been sending me recipes. So I bought myself one and tested it out with a venison shank from the local game butcher.
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Season the shank and seal the shanks on all sides in a hot pan
- 2
Chop the garlic, shallots, onions, carrots, potato, leeks and sweet potato
- 3
Remove the shanks and caramelise chopped garlic, onion, shallots and sweet potato. Add mixed herbs, fresh rosemary leaves and chipolatas
- 4
Deglaze the pan with the ale and top up with stock. Reduce slightly
- 5
Add the shank, potatoes, leeks and a rosemary spring to the slow cooker
- 6
Add the reduced gravy and veg. Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hrs. Turn down to low for the last two.
- 7
Serve on the bone with cranberry sauce. It will fall straight off 🤤

I bought some diced wild venison from our local Farmers market recently. The theory is that people who are allergic to beef and other commercially farmed livestock (like my son Jack) can often tolerate wild red meat and game. Unfortunately he didn't manage it this time but it made a great casserole for the rest of us Vicky@Jacks Free-From Cookbook -

Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup
My wife and I love Split Pea Soup. The weird thing is that I hate peas by themselves. I will systematically remove them from anything that has them. We took an old recipe that she has had for a while and converted it to the slow cooker. After a few tries and tweaks, we have worked out all the kinks and made a great soup. It is so good and it will thicken as time passes. It goes great with some rolls to dip into it. One of the best split pea soups that I have ever had. I am sure that this can be made into a vegan dish, by taking out the ham and replacing the chicken stock with vegetable. Worth the try. This is the prototypical slow cooker recipe. You just put all of the ingredients into the slow cooker, set the time, and forget about it for 8 hours. You can try to forget about it, but the smell will drive you crazy those 8 long hours. Be strong, the wait will be worth it.Enjoy! J.A.B. -
Venison burrito real meal! Venison burrito real meal!
Over the winter we killed 1 doe. We’ve been eating the meat little bits at a time. Today I decided to make a venison meal! This includes venison, rice, and pear strawberry walnut salad!Beef works too. If (and I’m sure you most likely don’t) have venison, beef will work. Lamb will too although, lamb does not have the same texture. Goat is definitely the closest meat to venison. Bmoorefood🧁
