Thinly slice the onions. Sauté them in butter until soft. Once cooked, sprinkle with sugar and let them caramelize.

Sprinkle with flour and mix well. Add the water, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.

Ladle the soup into bowls. Add the Swiss cheese on top and broil in the oven at 410°F (210°C) until the cheese is golden and bubbly. Serve with croutons.
