Here’s an easy way to make character bento rice balls without overdoing it. Use red and white imitation crab sticks as headbands to create red and white teams!
Recipe background:
☆ I made this character bento for my child’s sports day.
☆ My child requested Kirby and Waddle Dee from “Kirby of the Stars.” Since it was a special occasion, I made them into red and white teams.

Steps
- 1
For Kirby, mix the rice with sakura denbu. For Waddle Dee, mix the rice with ketchup. Shape each into a body and two hands, then arrange them in the bento box.
- 2
Add your side dishes. For Kirby’s feet, use imitation crab meat. For Waddle Dee’s feet, use pieces of tamagoyaki (cut to fit the bento box).
- 3
Tear the imitation crab sticks. Use the red part to make four cheek pieces, the white part to make four eye highlights, and cut four eyes and a small round mouth for Kirby from the nori.
- 4
Dab a little mayonnaise on the rice balls where you want to attach the eyes, cheeks, and mouth, then stick the pieces on.
- 5
For small parts, use food tweezers or a bamboo skewer for easier placement and adjustment.
- 6
Shred the remaining imitation crab sticks into thin strips to make headbands in each color. Attach them with a little mayonnaise.
- 7
☆ You can use edamame or broccoli as a side. For vegetables, use cooked and well-drained or sautéed ones instead of raw leafy greens for safety.
