Thotakura Pappu is a Andhra style Recipe (Toor Dal with Amaranth Leaves) is a very delicious dal recipe that is comforting to have it with a nice steamed rice and poriyal by the side. Amarnath leaves is a powerhouse of Iron, minerals and vitamins. It is considered as one of the super food and Ayurvedic friendly as well. The dal is made in just one pot and cooked with toor dal along with onions, tomatoes which adds in extra flavor to the dish. In Andhra amaranth leaves are called as Thotakura and Pappu is called as dal.

Ingredients

30 minutes
4 servings
  • 1/4 cup pigeon peas
  • 1 bunchamaranth leaves
  • 1 tbsoil
  • 1 TSPcumin seeds
  • 1 TSPmustard seeds
  • 1/2 TSPasafoetida
  • 10 cloveschopped garlic
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 1sliced onion
  • 1sliced tomato
  • as neededWater
  • 1 TSPred chilli powder
  • 1/2 TSPturmeric powder
  • 1 TSPgaram masala
  • 1 tbscumin and coriander powder
  • Salt and sugar according to your taste
  • For tadka
  • 1 tbsghee
  • 10-12garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsred chilli powder
  • 4dried red chillies
  • 1/2 TSPasafoetida

Steps

30 minutes
  1. 1

    Wash dal well, then pressure cook it till done. Let it cool down then mash it well.

    Wash amaranth leaves 3 to 4 times under running water. Then chop it roughly and keep aside.

    In a broad pan add oil, one by one add asafoetida, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves sliced onion and sliced tomato, stir fry it for 5 minutes.

    Then add all mix spices mentioned above.
    Then add chopped amaranth leaves and give it a good mix. Let it cook for 1 or 2 minutes.

    Then add cooked dal and combine everything well.

    In a tadka pan add ghee, let it heat up then add all ingredients mentioned above for tadka. Let it splutter well.
    Then pour hot tadka on dal.

    And serve it hot with roti or steamed rice. It tastes devine.
