Pepa's Torrijas (Spanish-Style French Toast)

In a saucepan, heat the milk with the cinnamon stick, lemon peel, 5 tablespoons of sugar, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil.

Arrange the bread slices in a baking dish. Strain the hot milk and pour it over the bread. Let soak for about 1 hour.

In a bowl, beat the eggs. Heat oil in a skillet. Dip each soaked bread slice in the beaten eggs, then fry until golden brown on both sides.

Mix sugar and ground cinnamon on a plate. Coat each fried torrija in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Plate and serve.
