Preheat oven to 175°C (top & bottom heat). Grease loaf pan with butter, line with baking paper, and grease again.

Prepare ingredients:
Measure and powder sugar (optional but recommended).
Measure butter, flour, milk.
Powder and measure hazelnuts.
Break eggs.
Sift flour and baking powder; mix in hazelnut powder, keeping one tablespoon aside for topping.

In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add vanilla essence, almond essence and salt.

Add eggs one at a time, beating for about 30 seconds after each addition.

Fold in hazelnut-flour mixture in four parts using a cut-and-fold method.

Add 50 ml milk and mix gently to form a smooth batter. Add extra 1 tbsp milk only if needed.

Pour batter into prepared pan, smooth the top, and tap gently to remove air bubbles.

Sprinkle hazelnut powder first, then place crushed hazelnuts on top.

Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.Rest cake in the pan for 10 minutes. Remove, peel off baking paper, and cool completely.

Slice the next morning for neat, clean slices.
