Bulgogi Beef

Bulgogi is a favorite meal of mine, but the $22 my favorite Korean takeout charged seemed a bit pricey for 1 serving. So I developed this recipe that will feed 4 for just about the same price. It comes together pretty quickly, smells incredible while cooking, and is absolutely delicious! Hope you'll give it a try.

Steps

20 minutes prep/cook
  1. 1

Slice the flank steak into thin strips across the grain. Place in a bowl and set aside while preparing the marinade/sauce.

Using a citrus zester, zest in the garlic cloves and fresh ginger. The onion didn't grate well using the zester, and it needs to be a wet paste, so I used my Cuisinart Smart Stick's chopper grinder attachment. Worked beautifully.

  3. 3

Stir in the pear juice, sweet soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, and Gochugaru into the garlic, ginger and onion. Pour this marinade mixture over the sliced steak and massage in well to coat all the pieces. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. I like to marinate for about 4-5 hours.

  4. 4

Mince the mushrooms. In a large skillet on high heat, add 1 tablespoon oil and fry the mushrooms, stirring, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  5. 5

Add the remaining vegetable oil to the skillet, then place the beef in the skillet in a single layer. Sear on both sides. Should only take about 2 minutes per side. Reduce heat to low. Stir in any marinade that's remaining in the bowl, the mushrooms, and the green onions and toss. Taste and add salt if needed.

  6. 6

Remove from heat and serve over rice. Enjoy!

Tips

If desired, you can sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top when serving. Stir fried snow peas are a great veggie side with this.

My 5 siblings and I were raised in the 1950s and 60s midwest by a major foodie dad who was a great cook. We all learned to cook at a young age. I love to cook for my 2 daughters, 7 grandkids, 10 great-grandkids, and extended family. My 4 year old great-grandson makes my day when he says "Nan sure is a good cooker!". :-). I'm trying to get all my favorite recipes saved here so my family and friends all have easy access to them even after I'm gone. My Cookpad collection is their inheritance, so I try to add my comments and memories to each recipe; that way they'll remember me with a smile when they use the recipes years from now. Recently I've called on my grandkids (all adults and avid cooks) to send me their own favorite recipes, with their prep photos, so we can collect everyone's favorites together in one place.
