Make the syrup first, placing the three ingredients for it in a pot and boiling it for 10 minutes. Start from that to give it time to cool in the meantime.

Beat the corn oil in the stand mixer for quite some time. You do this so that it doesn't smell afterwards.

Then add the sugar and beat well, once more.

Add the baking soda to the orange and then add all the liquid ingredients into the mixer bowl and then the solids after you mix the baking powder with the flour.

Form the melomakarona and bake at 180°C for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.

Pour the cold syrup into the hot baking tray as you take it out of the oven, then immediately turn the melomakarona upside down then place them into a platter and sprinkle with cinnamon and if you like, place a clove into each one.
