Ingredients

  1. 4 cupsall purpose flour
  2. 1 cupbrown sugar
  3. 2 1/4 cupsDutch-processed cocoa powder
  4. 3 teaspoonsbaking soda
  5. 3 teaspoonsbaking powder
  6. Pinchkosher salt
  7. 1 1/2 cupsmelted butter
  8. 6large eggs, lightly beaten
  9. 2 1/2 cupsstrong black coffee
  10. 2 1/2 cupsbuttermilk
  11. 1 tablespoonpure vanilla extract
  12. Above is for cake below for frosting
  13. 3 cupsbutter, softened
  14. 7 1/2 cupspowdered sugar
  15. 2 1/4 cupscocoa powder
  16. 1 tablespoonpure vanilla extract
  17. Pinchkosher salt
  18. 3/4 cupsheavy cream (more if necessary)
  19. 4 cupssemi-sweet chocolate chips, divided

Steps

    Preheat oven to 350. Line 3 8" pans with parchment and spray with nonstick cooking spray.

    In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugars, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the melted butter, eggs, coffee, buttermilk, and vanilla and whisk until smooth.

  3. 3

    Divide batter evenly among the cake pans. Bake about 35 minutes. Let them cool completely before removing from the pans.

  4. 4

    Meanwhile: make frosting. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powdered, vanilla, and salt. Beat in heavy cream (adding more by the tablespoon until consistency is creamy but can hold peaks).

  5. 5

    Frost cake between layers, then cover the entire cake with frosting. Cover the cake in chocolate chips. Put remaining chocolate chips in microwave then drizzle over the cake.
