My mom's baklava... Simply unique... I highly recommend making it during the holidays...
Steps
- 1
Melt the butter.
- 2
Roughly chop the walnuts and almonds in a blender or food processor.
- 3
Next, add the breadcrumbs to the blender and process until finely ground.
- 4
In a bowl, combine the almonds, walnuts, breadcrumbs, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and cloves. Mix with a spoon and set aside.
- 5
In a baking dish, layer five sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with some of the melted butter. Spread some of the nut filling over the fifth sheet. Then, layer three more sheets, brushing each with butter, and add more filling. Continue layering phyllo and filling in this way until all the sheets are used.
- 6
Cut the baklava into pieces and pour the remaining melted butter over the top.
- 7
Bake in a moderate oven (350°F/180°C) for about 1 hour.
- 8
For the syrup: In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, corn syrup, whole orange, and cinnamon stick.
- 9
Bring to a boil and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- 10
Let the syrup cool completely.
- 11
Pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava.
- 12
Enjoy! Wishing you beautiful holidays!
