Chili in a crockpot

My winter guest asked for chili. He lives on canned chili during the warm months so I thought a homemade version would be a nice change.

Steps
- 1
Soak dried beans overnight. Change rinse water periodically.
- 2
Brown onions and ground beef. Tilt skillet and remove excess oil/fat.
- 3
Pour off rinse water from beans and put the beans in a crockpot
- 4
Add the remaining ingredients EXCEPT for cheddar cheese.
- 5
Stir and season to taste. This is a mild recipe. If you want it spicier then add more chili powder, salsa or peppers.
- 6
Cook on high for 4-5 hours or on low for 8-10 hours. Check to be sure beans or done.
- 7
Serve hot with shredded cheddar cheese on top.
